K25 ‘B’ Team Report on the J24 Nationals

August 27th, 2015

The crew of Johnny Bravo collect their prizes for second place in the silver fleet.

The newly formed HYC K25 ‘B’ team took part in their first event this weekend at the J24 Nationals in Lough Derg. The team of Alex Shackleton, Thomas Natin, Orlagh Thompson, Medb Glackin and Ciaran White sailed onboard Johnny Bravo.

We have been training hard since forming at the start of the summer. The crew of Kilcullen have been showing us the ins and outs of J24 racing with a mix of on the water coaching and some practical advice. Day one saw us score consistently in the mid fleet, the highlight of which was reaching the first windward mark in 2nd, behind Kilcullen. Overnight we lay 6th overall and 2nd in the silver fleet. Day two brought no wind and a long wait for it to fill in, first on the water and then on land. Racing was officially called off at 6 o’clock in the evening.

Relaxing during the long postponement

The third and final day saw the return of the wind. Four races were held and we managed to hold onto our 2nd place in the silver fleet. We ended the regatta on a high note, finishing 4th, which shows how much we learned over the course of the event. In the end we finished 8th out of 13 Boats which we are very happy with. The event was very well run and we would like to thank everyone in LDYC for their hard work . It was noted at the event how happy the J24 class were that there is a new k25 team in the fleet and we look forward to next year when we plan to sail Europeans and nationals as well as all the events in HYC.
